"Section D'Or III" 2004
Wood, Gesso, Gold Leaf. H. 90 x 77 x 8 cm.
The measurements of the detail on this work come from the actual door of the artists studio, in his apartment in the Ave. Jean Volders 54 in Brussels, where he lived and worked from 1998 until 2008. The shape of the piece is taken from the Magritte painting "The Unexpected Answer", 1933, which is housed in the Museum of Fine Art in Brussels.
"Underhand" 2004
Wood + 'Underwood' Typewriter Cover.
H. 46.5 x 39 x 28 cm.
"The Half Reach of J.L.B." 2003
Gold Lamé, Button, 670 x 56 cm.
This work is an homage to the 'Great James Lee Byars' - Artist. His performances, in which he would appear in a gold lamé suit - made to measure by Mr. North-South in New York - were an important aspect to his work. The sleeves of the suit would always be much longer than normal, covering the artist's hands putting them beyond use, placing the figure as asocial, as adextrous (the antithesis of the Artist) and in the domain of the untouchable monarch. In the piece we also find reference to the 'dichotomy paradox' of Zeno of Elea, as found in Aristotle's 'Physics'; "That which is in locomotion must arrive at the half-way stage before it arrives at the goal." This being so, the work can be seen as a micro-section or macro-section of the reach in motion, and therefor, ultimately it proposes that the reach of Byars is infinite.
"Section D'Or I" 1999
Wood, Gesso, Gold Leaf. H. 200 x 10 x 9 cm.
The measurements in this piece are taken from the door of the artists studio in Antwerp, which was previously the office of the managing director of a shipping company, in the Indiastraat. The wood paneled room served as the artists studio from 1996 until 1999.
"Section D'Or II" 2000
Wood, Cardboard, Gesso, Emulsion, Gold Leaf. Dia. 90 x 4 cm.
This work is made from an actual door found in Webb's studio, in the Neckstraat, in Brussels. It was on the top floor of the old 'Victoria' biscuit factory and Webb worked there from 1999 to 2002.
"Section D'Or IV" 2004
Steel, Gold Leaf. H. 200 x 40 x 5 cm.
The shape of this piece, again, comes from "The Unexpected Answer" by Magritte. This time from the false perspective of the cut through the door - which in reality one would not be able to see if stood directly in front of door.
"Is Not a Door" 2003
Glass Jar + Label. Dia. 8 x H. 17.5 cm.
"When is a door not a door ?"
"Apprentice Piece" 2004
Wood, Gesso, Paint, Gold Leaf, Missals, Pocket Colt. H. 26 x 14 x 10 cm.
The two identical Missals used in this work have the title, "La Livre D'Or", embossed in gold on each spine.
"Lily King" 2003
Stretched Canvas, Found Coat Hanger (Inscribed 'Lily King'), Gold Leaf.
H. 30 x 24 cm.
Who is Lily King ? There is one L. King in the Brussels telephone directory. The blank canvas is marked by the enigmatic smile of La Gioconda - inverted. In 1964 the Dutch artist Daan Van Golden made a work consisting of a small monochrome painting with a wooden coat hanger attached to it. Where the hanger is in contact with the canvas it shares in the monochrome, leaving the ends that extend outside the picture, the natural wood. Van Golden's tribute to Jasper Johns.
"Saved (Lily King)" 2004
Collage, Found Material on Paper, framed under glass. 50 x 40 cm
"Dawr" 2004
Collage, Found Material on Paper, framed under glass. 50 x 40 cm.
